It is not how your library looks like, it’s how it feels

Have you ever paid attention to how you feel when you enter your public library? Some of us will go there because in our minds we connect libraries with the feeling of peace.

Going to the library means that I’ll be able to focus, that I’ll have a quiet space to work, as everyone else will be doing their own thing. Don’t take this wrong, it’s not that I’m anti-social, it’s that I have learned that even though everyone is involved in their task, the feeling of community is strong. It is like being a part of this big supportive family, that I don’t have to worry about.

It is not about the looks; it is about how it feels to be there. That feeling of support, unity, peace and freedom. However, you have to have the right design so your eyes can help boost those vibes.

When it’s time for me to take a mental break from my laptop, I’ll take a look around, to admire the space. Big tall ceilings, beautiful eye-catching furniture, curved shelves that make space look modern, natural light coming from everywhere. This space is beautiful, it is the perfect space to be.

I take a walk to stretch my legs, and I pass by the kid’s area. The librarian is reading this book about creatures of the sea. Kids eyes are concentrated on the book where they can see what looks like a friendly beluga. The feeling of excitement, fear and amusement is contagious.

It started to rain outside, but people don’t seem to notice as everyone is immersing in their own thing. No one seems to care what is happening outside because in the inside everything feels so peaceful, worry-free.

There are not many public spaces left where you can go and hide to concentrate. Everything seems to overwhelm with technology and noise. As the world population grows so does the noise. Having a space that is free of distractions, free of cost, it is truly a gift wouldn’t you agree?
